The buzz at BIO

From The Scientist's web editor, Simon Frantz:

One of the good things about going to BIO is that you get a very quick handle on what the community is thinking and anticipating the most. For me the most talked about subjects so far have been alternative funding methods and the large presence of Malaysia at the conference. Do you agree, or have you spotted other themes emerging at the conference?

I agree about Malaysia. I remember that someone at the media brunch mentioned that Malaysia has the third largest delegation of any country in Boston (about 350 members) after the US and Canada. Interesting, in light of the talk at the Bioentrepreneur roundtable about the challenges of building a biocluster to compete with the Bostons, San Diegos and San Franciscos.

I would also add that energy seems to be a hot topic here: biofuels, corn and cellulosic ethanol, moving beyond biofuels, etc.
