Costlier tech schools

After the management schools, now the technology schools are thinking of doubling their tuition fees. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have proposed to charge students Rs 50,000 annually as against the current Rs 21,000 to Rs 25,000. The proposal put forth by the standing committee of the IIT Council is being reviewed by the Indian ministry of Human Resource Development. If all goes well, the new fee structure would be applicable to admissions in 2008.

Wonder what future students and teachers have to say to the proposed hike.

Probably, fee hike is justified with increasing price of everything. But what about intelligent poor students? There are some fellowship programme for them but I think the number should increase as well to support this group.
Price increase is inevitable in these days but we can do something parallely to maintain the balance and give value to intelligent students who are economically poor. Otherwise, economic gap will increase between poor and rich and lead to unknown consequences.

I agree with Reshmi Mukherjee's observation.

At least IITs (IIMs too, but they did) are not supposed to hike the fees. Students, particularly poor, would be affected adversly thus eliminating several brilliant minds..
