Darwin And The Stitched Squid

Meet Plarchie, the 8-metre-long giant squid made entirely from Sainsbury’s carrier bags.

The crinkly cephalopod was created in just three days by Lauren O’Farrell, the handicrafts genius behind Stitch London.

Perhaps he’d get on even better with the knitted Darwin my wife made a year or two ago:

The shot of Plarchie cuddling up to Darwin at the NHM graces the front cover of Lauren’s new book, Knit the City, which compiles examples of ‘knitted graffiti’ (it’s currently only available in German, but I’m told an English version will be out soon).

Plarchie’s tenure at the museum was short-lived. However, if you’d like to see a real giant squid, the NHM’s Darwin Centre holds a real beastie. Here’s a video wot I made:
