Science Events In London This Week: 19-25 September

Monday

Quiz night returns to the RI, hosted by Londonist’s Matt Brown. For a glimpse into the dastardly workings of the RI quizmasters’ minds, have a look at last month’s picture round. 7pm start; £2 entry.

Wednesday

Brain food over lunch: the Wellcome Collection’s Packed Lunch series with local scientists talking over lunch this week addresses mirror neurons, thought to be the clue to human mimicry. Speaker: Zarinah Agnew, UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience. Free, first come, first seated.

Thursday

In an unusual breakfast event entitled Mind over matter, NESTA asks “Will computers enhance or limit our brains in the 21st Century?” Examples from advanced prosthetics to a revolutionary new treatment for Parkinsons in the medical field moving to mainstream applications in gaming, marketing and more. 8:30 – 9:30am: free but book in advance.

One not to miss at the Wellcome Collection: a discussion with Sir Paul Nurse, new president of the Royal Society (and last year voted the most influential person in British science). Free but book.

A new monthly series curated by the editor of New Scientist, Roger Highfield, Instant Expert invites a leading figure in an important field to provide a guide that explains everything a well informed person needs to know on the topic. This month’s experts: astrophysicist Michael Rowan-Robinson on what invisible rays from radio to gamma have revealed about the cosmos, and Sir John Pendry explaining how metamaterials manipulate light in ways that seem almost impossible – including the creation of the first invisibility cloak. 7 – 8:30pm; £10, book now.

Friday

The Natural History Museum joins a Europe-wide festival of science to host Science Uncovered, celebrating European Researchers’ Night. Special tours, activities and events from 4 – 11pm: see the programme for all the details. All events are free, but some, including the night’s big public debate Losing our Principles? need booking in advance.

Saturday

A one-day workshop at the RI entitled :Presentation skills : how to engage 7 to 11 year olds designed to help scientists and engineers learn to better inspire children when communicating with them. Includes presenting, engaging, how to get attention and more, with practical and theoretical examples. £125; book now.
