Science’s fake journal epidemic

Posted by Jack Leeming | Categories: Academia, Ask the expert, Communication, Open access, Publishing, Research, Technology

Science’s fake journal epidemic

The landscape of scholarly communication falls into two main categories: a paid access business model, where journals require readers to pay for access to an article or a subscription to the entire journal itself; or open access journals, which charge authors to publish but make content available free of charge and without restrictions to readers. The rise in popularity of open access journals has resulted in more than 50 per cent of new research now being made available free online. Legitimate open access journals such as PLOS and BioMed Central have been essential in allowing greater access to science, a higher volume of published work, improved education and a greater scope for scientists to publish negative results.  Read more

#scidata16: Open data should be easy

#scidata16: Open data should be easy

On the morning of October 26, 2016, a group of scientists convened in London to discuss the state of open data. The third Publishing Better Science through Better Data conference kicked off with morning tea, international introductions, and furious scribing from @roystoncartoons. The premise was simple: “Today is all about being open”, said conference chair Iain Hrynaszkiewicz. We settled in to learn the advantages of data sharing at both the individual level and for the scientific community at large.  Read more

Scientific writing: A very short cheat sheet

Posted by Jack Leeming | Categories: Academia, Ask the expert, Blog, Communication, PhD, Publishing, Report, Research

Scientific writing: A very short cheat sheet

The life of a researcher is incomplete without undergoing the trauma of writing scientific documents: papers, grants, protocols, theses, and so on and on. Most researchers find this stressful, time-consuming, and difficult; and, despite the enormous time and effort invested in writing, I for one often come across close-to-incomprehensible papers while digging through the literature. Why is that the case, and how do we fix it?  Read more

What are the benefits of reproducibility in science?

What are the benefits of reproducibility in science?

On June 6, 2012, I skipped class to watch the transit of Venus. I was studying in Adelaide, Australia, where the transit lasted from early morning until mid-afternoon and we had a wonderfully sunny day to view it. If I had known a bit more about the history of the transit, I may have been more thankful for that.  Read more

How is the rise of data-intensive research changing what it means to be a scientist?

Posted by Jack Leeming | Categories: #ScientistOnTheMove, Academia, Communication, Data, Research, Technology

How is the rise of data-intensive research changing what it means to be a scientist?

There has always been an emphasis on the generation of novel data in science. Being a scientist involves progressing from observation to hypothesis to experiment to output. In the past, a combination of scarce data to look at and low throughput machinery to make more has led to limited experimental outcomes.  Read more

The era of big data is coming: Scientists need to step out of their comfort zone

Réka Nagy

On my first day as a new PhD student, freshly awarded molecular genetics degree in hand, I was sat down at a laptop with an unfamiliar operating system and was encouraged to explore some data using arr. What sounded like pirate speak turned out to be R, a statistical programming language. Yep – for my PhD I swapped pipettes for programming, dilutions for data and spectrophotometers for statistics. Others experienced the opposite, entering the world of biology from a computer science background.  Read more
