Dutch fraudster returns his PhD

Diederik Stapel, the Dutch psychologist who was found to have fabricated data in dozens of papers, has voluntarily returned the PhD he earned from the University of Amsterdam in 1997, according to a statement (in Dutch) from the university.

The report (in Dutch) on Stapel’s misconduct found as many as 30 papers that might have involved fraud, but said that it was impossible to determine whether his work on the PhD was fraudulent. It recommended that the university investigate whether the degree could be withdrawn on the grounds of “academically unworthy conduct”.
