Mature sperm and eggs grown from same stem cells

Technological advance could help infertile people to have children.

Stem cells from a mouse embryo have been coaxed into producing both eggs and sperm in the same dish. The eggs and sperm are the most mature yet grown in the lab, and the advance brings researchers closer to their ultimate aim: producing human eggs and sperm from adult body cells so that infertile men and women can have their own children.

It is an important finding. It sure will be having a therapeutic value. The ethical issue of obtaining eggs can be bypassed.

However, a point to be concerned is - how safe is the parthenogenesis/fertilisation that occurs in this process? A control over this is needed if we are to allow the fusion between best of eggs and sperms. This is a question to be addressed especially while developing the protocol for therapeutic purposes. For this, an insight into the factors that trigger the development of sperms and eggs in different regions of the embryiod bodies and also their genetic stability is needed.

men will be destroyed by themselves--curiosity-driven explorations!

In response to the above news published on 23 june,I am writing to news blog.

In the above news, the research team has mentioned that applying the technique of producing eggs and sperm from the same stem cells could be contoversial in the case of humans. first of all I did not understand bcoz I know that the cells stem cells of a woman gives rise to egg and for man -sperms. I wonder whether they have checked if the mouse has any syndrome(for eg an extra sex chromosome like in kline felters etc)

Does it mean, in far future, sex can be done away with? I wonder what puritans would think about this. May be more support will come from them than from ethicists.

The finding and technique are definitely interesting and I believe we can make good use of it. "Curiosity kills the cat" though we say, without these cutting-edge technologies, living in the over-populated planet would have been harder. Explosive this piece of news may sound, I think this technology is not going to be widely applied without mature thinking and discussion. It will have a quit possitve future, I believe.

I don't quite understand how can one stem cell (say from a male, with XY chromosome) can generate an egg? Would the egg have xy chromosome as well? Or vise versa.

Each month lots of people visit http://www.Alcwin.org Whether it is Chemistry, geology, mathematics or a whole range of topics

You have to admit this would be a beautiful thing for an infertile couple though. Actually able to have their own children... wonderful.
