Maths 'Nobel' prize declined by Russian recluse

Grigory Perelman a no-show for his Fields Medal.

Four mathematicians were today due to collect gold medals and glory in Madrid, Spain, having been declared winners of the 2006 Fields Medals — referred to as the 'Nobel prizes' of mathematics. But only three turned up.

Just read that Grigory Perelman refused the $1M math prize. Women in the future may refuse the prize as well (I did not see any women on the list of contenders). What's up? Male club? As a father of daughters and granddaughters, I'd want women to know mathematics as well.

[editor's note: Perelman has not, as yet, been offered the $1 million Clay Prize. The prize he has turned down comes with about $13,000.]

"Russian recluse"... That's how you called a genius nowdays. Very sad. In that case, Nature should switch its name to Jealousare.
