Today's podcast says that Australopithecus afarensis dated to 3.3mya is the common ancestor of humans & chimpanzees. Is this a mistake?

Hello Jean

Apologies for the late reply to your posting due to a technical problem now resolved.

You are quite right that this was an erroneous comment on our podcast - Australopithecus afarensis is an ancestor of humans but not of chimpanzees, as the two primates had diverged long before the appearance of Australopithecus around 3.9 million years ago.
