A logical extension of treatment with propranolol is to combine it with phentolamine, and test the combined treatment. These two treatments will block all receptors for norepinephrine. Thus, one may see an enhanced therapeutic response over propranolol alone (propranolol blocks beta and phentolamine blocks alpha receptors). If results are positive better drug combinations are available.
