New candidate drug for bipolar disorder
A designed alternative to lithium shows early promise.
A potential new drug for treatment of bipolar disorder (sometimes called manic depression) is being designed by researchers in Chicago and New York. The team hopes that their compound, which works as well in mice as do the currently prescribed drugs, will ultimately provide relief without the side-effects of present treatments.

I hope this is succesful. Having a daughter who is dealing with this disorder and seeing the side effects of her medicines causing problems that are unwanted makes me want to be able to try this new drug. But I know we need to go through the testing to prove no other problems. I wish the researchers the best in doing their work.

I believe that the sentence "They also altered the enzyme so that it could get from the blood into the brain", should read "They also altered the compound so that it could get from the blood into the brain".
