No. Bigfoot does not live on Mars - January 23, 2008

NASAmanMainMANEDIT.jpgSometimes you just have to hold your hands up in despair.

Various newspapers in the UK have taken a photo from one of NASA’s Mars rovers, blown up a rock feature and posed the following questions:
Does this show there's life on Mars? (Times)
Bigfoot on Mars? NASA captures alien figure (Telegraph)
...continued in a similar vein by The Sun, freepaper Metro, the Daily Express, and others. I’m sufficiently upset about this to deny them the linkage.

It’s a rock.

If you don’t believe me here’s what the respected Bad Astronomy blog says: it’s a rock. In full BA says: “First, puhlllleeeeze. A man? It’s a tiny rock only a few inches high. It’s only a few feet from the rover!”

Here’s the full NASA image from which the above was clipped:

I’m off to find a random feature of a NASA photo I can zoom in on and claim it’s an orang-utan. That will ingratiate me with the news editor -- and if we’re making stuff up I want a whole zoo up there.

A rock huh? Why dont you take the inventory of rocks on this planet and show me one that looks like this. Just 1, in all the world. 1. A rock? Sure.

Its not a rock!!!!
or if it its the most humanoid shaped rock in the world, why is so hard to belive that there is a chance of alien life on mars, or was alien life on mars. This picture could have proven we are not alone. Thank you.

Well, it could be an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny Bigfoot. Couldn't it? It coulda been shot to Mars when Bigfoots ruled the Earth but had the same kind of problems with interplanetary payloads that we have. Couldn't it?

Daniel, you gotta learn to think outside the box!

Killjoy.

In the far right of the image, just slightly higher than this "alien" there is another "ape like figure" or rock that appears to be "walking away" from the rover.

No, I don't think it's Bigfoot on Mars. However, I'm not 100% convinced it's 'just a rock' either. I've really no solid idea what it is.

However, it's not just a few feet from the rover. The rocky ridge in the middle left side of the photo, is about 100 feet from the edge of the plate that the rover is on. Check NASA's website for verification. The rover is a few feet across so it's perhaps 5 to 10 feet from the plate edge. From rover to that rocky ridge it's about 105 to 110 feet then. The image in question is about 1/3 of the way to the rocky ridge...so about 30-35 feet. Not a few feet. Perhaps the 'figure' is then a few feet in height. Not inches.

In any event, I think at this point it's obviously unidentified at the least.

could be a mini bigfoot... its possible

It looks much more like the Little Mermaid to me.

IT'S BIGFOOT! THERES NO WAY THATS FAKE. OF COURSE ITS NOT BIGFOOT, BUT ITS DEFINITELY A LIVING CREATURE, UNLIKE WE'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE.

Just wondering if this is a small rock a few feet from the rover would you please point it out to me...i may be a fool but i have searched the image you posted and i find NO rock of the shape and size you have specified.

[The second image accessible via the Times story shows where the rock in question is. Zoom in on the
full NASA image
and you’ll see it – Ed.]

So this is a pretty wack theroy but there was a man in the US a while ago (think his name was Stan Johnson) who said that when he was a boy he met bigfoot in the Ozarks every day after school. He said that Bigfoot was from an alternate Dimension...kindof interesting if you ask me that the most recent sighting is on another planet? Doesn't dimension theroy have something to do with space/time...if he could travel to alternate dimension couldn't he go to other planets as well? I may sound like an idiot here but i was just wondering.

Thanks...but that's a lot further away then a few feet...Isn;t it?

I guess that's a fossil of Alien belonging to Mars.

If thats living alien then the rover should be able to find more of them.

The single photo cannot be taken as evidence of life on mars.

How ever two photographs can prove the point.Just waiting for the other one with the Alien standing or doing something else.

if it's a rock how about we get another picture of it NOT MOVING...just one...why wouldn't NASA take more then one frame? Do they always do that?
WTF

THis would be very easy to Disprove. if it's just a rock, taking a picture from ANY other angle would look different would it not?

ok if it is a rock show take another picture from the same polace and tell everyone if it is still there if so then i will no it is a rock

Interesting to say the least, and coming from NASA it is highly unlikely that this is a hoax. However, a creature the size of Bigfoot would need to consume considerably more food than a barren landscape like Mars seems capable of providing.

If there is indeed water on Mars or any other type of nutrients capable of supporting organisms then it seems logical to continue searching for these since any life would most likely stay close to its food source, hopefully this would give us another image.

go to google images type in bigfoot peruse the pictures and SEE the eerie similarities between this image of the man on mars and some pictures of "bigfoot" what is going on here? people are gullible as well as willing to believe ANYTHING. is this a tool for conditioning our minds to accept the unacceptable?

It plainly looks like a petrified humanoid figure. Analysis of light and shadow reveal the arm and leg are cylindrical. Enlarge it in Photoshop and you'll see.

FWIW...I am an expert in the field of machine vision. I'm not saying it is a living creature. I'm saying it has the shape of a human, whatever it is.

"THis would be very easy to Disprove. if it's just a rock, taking a picture from ANY other angle would look different would it not?"

It would, but would that really a good use of equipment and resources better spent on legitimate research?

How do we know what its food sorces are if it isn't a rock...if it's ligitly a Martian then how do we know what it needs to survive? who said it had to use the same things as us? couldn't life evolve in different ways in such harsh conditions as those of mars?

just for Scott...since when has our government EVER spent resorces on "legitimate" anything...they spend money frivolusly on anything that seems to tickel their fancy. Doing this would be an acceptable use of my tax $$...are you more hip with wasting them on wepons and war? This seems more intellegent to me.

i'm not trying to be offensive i just wanted to know your opinion

Well, it is a good picture. To way get to the bottom of this whole issue is to take another picture in the same positn at the current photo, if it is still there then it is a rock or there was possibly life on mars at one time.

Thanks!

Hay my name is grace groslyn and.I thank is a rock and alin

big foots native land is mars i know i[m a big foot expert and i have seen him plenty of times on mars. i got a personal space shuttle that i take to mars once a week.

I guess I'm late to the party, I just found this video somewhere on the internet so I'm late to realize we discovered a cool shaped rock on mars that's an alien rock monster thing. It's seriously sad when people make up anything they can make up to say there's this alien or that alien. This is a ******* rock. I believe in aliens, but this isn't any sort of proof there's aliens. I could drop a ******* banana peel and someone would call it a Alien Fossil. God, people are ********.

o my good the ufo is realy end i confide to ufo i love ufo i like tu see bue scered bye bye

We're facing here a problem.. We can't think like everything on Mars it's just as same looking like beings on Earth. Common ... it's Mars, if there is something there that lives it would surely need to protect from the temperature like -60^C so.. their "skin" could look like a stone cuz it should be super strong to hold life in this kinda pressure ~0,7kPA and extra low [for us] temp.

i think this is a lode of crap
