Picture post: Opportunity backtracks on Mars - September 01, 2008

Mars rover Opportunity has finally inched its way out of Victoria crater, retracing the steps (or crawls) it took into the 70 metre-deep hole almost a year ago. Congratulations to the team who carefully steered the aged, clanking, Wall-E-esque thing to safety.

My colleague Katharine Sanderson took a detailed look at the life of Opportunity last week, as it prepared its Victoria escape attempt. After it finally got out it looked back - though not in anger - and took the above snap (NASA press release).
