Pfizer cuts cardio research - October 01, 2008

Posted on behalf of Laura Starr

The world’s largest drug maker, Pfizer, has abandoned its efforts in the development of medicines for heart disease in favour of more profitable conditions. This news is getting a load of media attention within the US
(Boston Globe, Reuters). This step is only one of many in a re-shuffle of the company’s research and development activities.

Cuts are also being made in other research disciplines, such as obesity and bone health. The head of research and development at Pfizer, Martin Mackay, told the Wall Street Journal that these are “just not as valuable as other programs, like Alzheimer’s or oncology.” Other future research interests lie in the fields of pain, inflammation, diabetes and schizophrenia.

Pfizer is expected to spend over $7 billion in research this year. Liz Power, a company spokeswoman, says that although the budget is a colossal amount, it is finite and Pfizer needs to make changes to stay at the top of the industry. A couple of months ago, The Great Beyond reported on the potential for a drop in its current rankings.

It’s not only Pfizer that’s feeling the pressure. Other companies in the industry also have plans to cut back (Nature).

In my opinion it is right that drug producers are thinking as industrials. However, in the Medicine field, it is unavoidable that drug would be experimented in well selected and enrolled people. In fact, if obese individuals aren't involved by diabetic and hypertensive constitutions, Inherited Real Risk of CAD, a.s.o., drug company is not authorized to state that its product is efficacious in preventing diabetes, hypertension and especially CAD! I'dd say to the head of research and development at Pfizer, Martin Mackay, that untill all chemists and physicians will not learn what Biophysical- Semeiotic Constitutions and related Inherited Real Risk do really mean, we shall unfortunately living in the present Mean Age of Medicine.See on www.nature.com, following URLs:
