Small World: Big pictures - October 09, 2009

The Nikon-sponsored ‘Small World’ photography competition has unvield another set of truly stunning images of the world.

In first place is this shot, by Heiti Paves of Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia. It shows the male sex organ of the thale cress.

In second place, Gerd Guenther, of Düsseldorf, Germany, and this flower stem section.

Pedro Barrios-Perez, of the Institute for Microstructural Sciences in Otttawa, Canada, takes third place for this image of a wrinkled photoresist.

My personal favourite though is this tiny lobster inside an egg, from Tora Bardal of the NTNU Center of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Trondheim, Norway.
