Journal journeys: Day 25, First contact

I’m sure that some of you may have noticed that the signature to my Friday post on ‘Reactions’ finally had a link in it to Nature Chemistry.

This is the first incarnation of the Nature Chemistry website and just covers the basics at this point. It will be fleshed out with a lot more details in a couple of months’ time, but at least you can now see the colour…

    Stuart,

Fantastic news (though I first heard about this a while back). I take it that the new journal will be all-inclusive, and thus gunning for JACS and Angewandte?

My other question is: Why now? Chemistry has been around as a published science since the dawn of time; areas such as materials, chembio, nanotech – all chemistry related – have had Nature journals for a while.

    Very pleasing!

It is almost exactly the same colour as Nature Protocols… What does it all mean…?

I think we’re a few shades lighter than you lot… I’m not sure what that means…

Paul, thanks. Yes, we shall be all-inclusive, but obviously very selective in terms of quality. Why now? Good question… it could be argued that NPG has had a bit of a blind spot for chemistry in the past, but it has been building up in this area in recent years – chemistry content in Nature itself, Nature Chemical Biology and this blog, as well as the chemistry podcast. I think a lot of the infrastructure is now in place and NPG is finally ready to launch Nature Chemistry. I’ll probably come back to this question in its own blog entry – cheers, Stuart

I think a great number of organizations have a bit of a blind spot for chemistry but I look forward to reading more about your thoughts.

I am also looking forward to the first edition of Nature Chemistry…and then I can dream about maybe getting published in it 😉

I love the colour, but I’m biased because it is my favorite colour in all the world.

I think you are very lucky to be purple. A lovely colour== rich, regal and warm. Some of the journals have quite unfortunate colours, but in the interests of peace I shall not name names — we know who they are!

But I have always wondered, does the launch Editor in Chief have any say in the colour? Does your view have weight? (I write with my female hat on as I am ashamed to say that my one contribution to buying the new family car, apart from spending a few years saving up for it, is to choose the colour.)

You know, I still don’t know who has the final final say on the journal colour – if I had suggested hot pink, there would probably be someone who would tell me ‘no’ – and then shake their head and make disappointed tutting noises. But it was me who suggested purple, and after I was shown a few alternatives that would ‘work’, I just pointed to one and the rest is history… Purple is not necessarily my favourite colour (I think for boys, favourite colour and football teams go hand in hand), but it does say ‘chemistry’ to me… permanganate, porphyrins, tyrian purple, mauve, etc…
