I’m supposed to be on holiday today, but I can’t contain my excitement. We now have 10,000 unique tags on Nature Network!!

You can apply tags to more-or-less anything on the site, from your personal profile to events. In fact, 34,544 separate items have now been tagged. That’s a lot of stuff.

Tags serve many purposes. For example, we can use them to match things together. If you go to the People section while logged in, you’ll see a space called ‘Similar people’. This picks out other people on the Network who have similar tags to you – the idea being that they’re likely to have similar interests and might be worth contacting.

Of course, this only works if you’ve tagged your personal profile with words describing your interests. So go do it now if you haven’t already.

In the future we’ll be looking at ways to make the tags even more useful. For example, we might match people to local events or jobs they may be interested in.
