Bright Club Thrusts Academics On Stage

I’ve never been to a Bright Club. I guess I never felt qualified. I still don’t. But you can only resist an event with the tag-line ‘The Thinking Person’s Variety Club’ for so long. Hence, I’ve booked tickets to the next performance, if that’s the right word, on 26 October at the Bloomsbury Theatre.

I should back up a little and explain what Bright Club is. Actually, let’s be bright about this. Instead of thinking up a clever way to introduce the concept, I’ll simply quote from their Facebook page.

Bright Club blends comedy, music, art, new writing, science, performance, and anything else that can happen on a stage. Each month our experts will dissect one of the important things in life from eight different directions, and in doing so create a great experience for you.

It’s a jolly clever initiative from UCL to give their top brains a public arena, where they can discuss their work in a light-hearted way. This month, the theme is museums, and the stage lineup includes representatives from UCL’s Grant and Petrie museums, a wisening of academics and the odd comedian or two (well, Robin Ince, who’s not really all that odd, but very, very funny).

I expect great things, especially as the whole ensemble is the brainchild of Steve Cross, who did such a sterling job curating the early exhibitions at the Wellcome Collection.

Tickets for Bright Club can be purchased here for just £5. Let me know if you’re thinking of going and we can be bright together.
