2013 Lindau Video: New drugs for old bugs

Nature Video presents four debates from the 2013 Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau

At this summer’s Lindau Meeting we focused on pressing world problems and how chemistry can help us to solve them. In four films, laureates and students clash over the future of energy production, grapple with drug development, discuss dwindling supplies of metal catalysts and debate science’s role in the developing world. Get a taster in this trailer.

The eager researchers come to the debates with big ideas and high hopes, while the laureates bring a healthy dose of experience. You can find out more in our first film, Fuelling controversy, in our second film Science in the developing world and in our third film Industry’s rare resources.

In our final film, the focus is drug discovery. Three researchers challenge the structural approach and propose alternative ways to find drugs; some cutting edge, such as computation, and some ancient, such as searching for chemicals deep in the rain forest. What is the best way forward? Or is a combination of techniques the most promising approach?

In our second film, we look at what role can science play in the developing world. In this film, Nobel Peace Prize winner José Ramos-Horta and Israeli Nobel laureate Dan Shechtman discuss the issue with young researchers from South Africa, India and the US.

Science and politics collide as the group grapple with funding problems, social responsibility and culture. The laureates emphasize that science alone is not enough; researchers must work with industry and government to solve the problems of the developing world. Continue reading

Nature Video presents five debates from the 2012 Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau

At the 2012 Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau, physics was on the agenda. The popular topic was particle physics because during the meeting, scientists at CERN announced the discovery of the Higgs particle. To recap on all the Lindau coverage you can check out our reports from the conference, including Storifys and photos, here.

Throughout the conference, the Nature Video team were on hand to capture some of these valuable moments. For example they filmed George Smoot and Martinus Veltman as they digested the news from CERN with three young researchers.

The other films deal with the relationship between theory and experiment, the state of science education, the looming energy crisis, so make sure you check them out!

Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting – It’s a wrap! #lnlm12

Lindu wrap

This year’s meeting of Nobel Laureates was dedicated to Physics, as more than 25 Nobel Laureates gathered on the picturesque island of Lindau, ready to respond to the eager questions from early career scientists. Set on Lake Constance and running from 1st -6th July, the meeting provided a rare chance for selected young scientists to meet with Nobel Laureates for a gathering of plenary discussions and informal conversations. The extra bonus for this year’s attendees was that CERN announced the discovery of the Higgs Boson on Wednesday, allowing everyone to see first-hand the reaction of the physics Nobel laureates.

Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting – Friday’s Storify #lnlm12

The final day of this year’s Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting involved the customary boat trip to Isle of Mainau, where this year the closing panel discussion focused on, “The Future of Energy Supply and Storage.”

To capture the live tweeting around these sessions, as well as video and blog content, we have created a Storify storyboard. Do check back as we’ll be updating it as more coverage is published. You can find Monday’s Storify here, Tuesday’s Storify here, Wednesday morning’s Storify here, Wednesday’s panel discussion here and Thursday’s here.

You can also find the Storifys mirrored on the official Lindau Nobel Community site. Continue reading
