The Globe reports, via Time magazine, that Harvard will use satellite images to monitor the human rights situation in the Sudan. The sponsor? Not NSF, but actor George Clooney:
The Satellite Sentinel Project, which is being funded by actor and activist George Clooney’s humanitarian group, Not on Our Watch, will rely on the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative to assess the situation on the ground, where hundreds of thousands of civilians in the Darfur region have been killed over the past decade in ethnic violence.
“We want to see if we actually make a difference in keeping people safe,’’ said Nathaniel Raymond, the program director at Harvard.

HHI’s Program on Crisis Dynamics examines the use of information communications technologies in conflict and disaster settings. Research focuses on identifying patterns in humanitarian emergencies to improve response. HHI examines the impact of crisis mapping, geospatial and crowd sourcing technologies to prepare, mitigate, and respond to emergencies.
