The European Commission has appointed seven new members to the European Research Council’s governing body, the Scientific Council.
The new members are:
Nicholas Canny, a historian at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and president of the Royal Irish Academy
Tomasz Dietl, a physicist at the Polish Academy of Sciences
Daniel Dolev, a computer scientist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Timothy Hunt, a biologist at Cancer Research UK’s London Research Institute
Mart Saarma, a biologist at the University of Helsinki
Anna Tramontano, a biochemist at the Sapienza University of Rome
Isabelle Vernos, a biologist at the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona
The new members will begin their two-year terms on 2 February. The full Scientific Council consists of 22 members, and its first term of office ends in February. Two-thirds of the council will serve a second term. Notable departures include Fotis Kafatos, a molecular entomologist at Imperial College London who was the first president of the ERC.
