Final day at Nature

Well, this is it. My last few hours in a salaried job. From Monday, I’ll be flying solo, making my way in the precarious but exciting world of the freelancer.

It’s been a very strange week. I keep having ‘last’ moments. Every time I visit a sandwich shop or a particular part of the building I think, ‘well, that’ll be the last time I do that’. And this is another—my final blog post from my desk at Nature.

But it won’t be my final blog post on Nature Network. From Monday, I’ll be running the London sections of NN in a freelance capacity—blogging about the key scientific activities and news around town, beefing up the events calendar and stimulating debate on the London forum. And, of course, I’ll be popping up in the comments to other people’s posts. When I’m not on NN, I’ll be exploring, reading and writing about London for various publications. Keep an eye, in particular, on Londonist.com, where I’ll be returning as editor on Monday.

I’m not going to gush on, but I’d like to thank all my friends and colleagues at Nature for the most wonderful two years of my life. Where else would I have got the opportunity to sit in a flying car, share ice cream with The Queen, organise a conference at the Royal Institution, and utterly murder Staying Alive in a karaoke duet with Timo Hannay (link unavailable)?

So farewell from Kings Cross and I’ll read you all next week from my new office, on a beanbag in my apartment at this table. And if you want to get in touch, my email is i.am.mattbrown – at – gmail.com or Twitter @ mattfromlondon

Au revoir
