Fire destroys Brazilian snake specimen collection

A fire at a research centre in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has destroyed the world’s largest collection of snake specimens. (BBC News)

The 100-year old collection at the Butantan Institute included 80,000 preserved snakes and thousands of specimens of spiders and scorpions. The collection’s curator, Franciso Franco, said the destruction of is a “loss to humanity”.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
