Grant Museum Prepares To Reopen, Screens Cult Sci-Fi Classic

For a museum that few people have heard of, and which currently has no physical existence, UCL’s Grant Museum does a sterling job of putting on interesting events. The latest treat from the zoologically flavoured institution is a special screening of The Fly; not the gory Jeff Goldblum flick, but the 1958 original.

The film marks the start of the Grant Museum’s Natural Change season; ironic, really, given that the transmogrification at the centre of the film is anything but natural…unless that’s an organically grown teleportation device.

The ‘Natural Change’ theme ties in with the museum’s own transformation. The museum of zoology moved out of its poky Gower Street HQ last year in favour of more roomy premises round the corner. It’s due to reopen on 15 March, “After eight months of packing, design, construction, unpacking, screwing skeletons together and reorganising 68000 dead animals”.

I will, of course, be there to get a behind-the-scenes update on the move. In the meantime, take a look at the other highlights of their winter/spring programme, including how science has changed since Darwin’s day, the changing climate, and the relaunch event itself.
