We live in a wonderful city for scientific entertainment. I could reel off at least 30 venues that regularly host public events with a scientific theme. Most are listed in the London events calendar. Each week, I’ll sift it for my pick of the best events around town.
Monday 14 February
AKA Valentine’s day. I’ve already rounded up a boudoir of romantic events for the scientist. I’d particularly recommend the ‘love tunnel’ tour, having just got back from the Sunday preview. Alternatively, you can visit the Royal Geographical Society to hear series producer Dale Templar talk about the current BBC series Human Planet.
Tuesday 15 February
A trio of decent evening events tonight, so take your pick. The Royal Institution have John D Barrow describing the many possible unive allowed by the laws of physics (£10, prebook). A panel at the Dana Centre explore how we can enthuse and not bore people about climate change (free, prebook). And the London School of Economics has a psychologist’s view of consciousness (free, no need to book).
Wednesday 16 February
Back to the Dana Centre for a look at synthetic biology and its possibilities in the environmental sciences (free, prebook).
Thursday 17 February
The Linnean Society on Piccadilly have a talk about my namesake Robert Brown, the little-known figure behind Brownian motion and a canopy of botanical discoveries. There’s a wine reception afterwards. (Free, no need to book.)
Friday 18 February
The Royal Society’s lunchtime lecture tackles the issues of women in science, and how attitudes have changed (or not) over the past century (free, prebook).
