MIT to construct new buildings

MIT announced yesterday its plans to build three new academic buildings, a new graduate residence as well as renovations to existing buildings, all totaling $750 million. MIT’s Center for Cancer Research will get a $230,000, 360,000 square foot building, the largest of the new projects, according to an article in the Boston Globe. It will be next to the existing biology building and across the street from the Broad Institute and will bring biologists and engineers together doing interdisciplinary work. The other buildings will be for the Sloan School of Management and an extension for the Media Lab.

This is on the heels of a recent announcement from Boston College to expand its campus. Harvard’s planning for its new Allston campus is on-going and several other local universities have been building recently as well. There’s also been construction in the Longwood area (see our article). Boston research institutions are certainly booming.
