This isn’t completely science related, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that a President Obama will be good for science and scientists. Already, it looks like US science is poised to receive an injection of funding from Washington DC, as part of the economic stimulus package, according to this news article from Nature. And scientists have applauded Obama’s picks for science advisors (John Holdren as the chief advisor, along with Harold Varmus and Eric Lander) and other key Cabinet positions, namely Nobel Laureate Steven Chu to head up the Department of Energy.
So I’m sure Obama’s inauguration will be celebrated in labs and universities across the country. In that vein, here are a few links to some Boston-area festivities happening over the weekend and through to the big day on Tuesday. It won’t be anything like hanging out with the 3 million other people in DC, but at least we won’t have to fight the crowds.
You can watch the live TV broadcast at the historic Old South Church downtown on Tuesday the 20th starting at 11:30am.
The Boston Globe’s calendar lists many events, including a ball at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel downtown.
There will be a celebratory cruise of Boston Harbor on Saturday night.
This page lists several events happening at various restaurants.
And going.com lists several events at other bars and restaurants.
If there are other events you know of or are going to, please post them here.
