India’s Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Ketan Desai, president of the Medical Council of India (MCI) on corruption charges.
The MCI is responsible for accrediting medical colleges and setting standards for medical education. Desai was remanded to police custody on 22 April for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs.20 million ($450,000) for granting recognition to a medical college in Punjab.
The Mumbai based People’s Health Organization has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “to disband MCI, revamp medical education in the larger public interest and review all the MCI decisions on recognition of private colleges and courses”.
