Science Events In London This Week

The last week of the summer holidays is the quietest yet, but with one highlight: Science Online London 2011, the annual conference covering all things to do with science and the web. Co-organised by Digital Science and Nature.com, the conference is on Friday and Saturday, and is sold out, but for those without tickets, there are several fringe events open to all which you can still join in on.

Wednesday

Last chance to see the Wellcome Collection’s exhibition on Dirt. Closing after five months of uncleanliness, the exhibition covers everything you never thought to ask about the dirt around us.

Thursday

September’s Talkfest, organised by the Biochemical Society addresses the question of whether online science communication is a hobby or part of the day job, whether there’s really a distinction and whether getting amateurs involved in citizen science is a good way of reaching new audiences. Chaired by Alice Bell, Imperial College. Free, but book tickets in advance.

Friday

Day 1 of Science Online London. Topics include engaging with peer-reviewed literature online and incentives for online communication and research.

A SOLO fringe event, but open to all, attending or not, the SameAs quiz returns, a science themed pub quiz hosted by Kaitlin Thaney and Matt Wood. 7pm, Juno bar in Shoreditch; free, but register if you can on Lanyrd.

Saturday

Day 2 of Science Online London. with workshops, scientific data and sessions suggested by attendees.

A little bit out of London, but it is a weekend and this is definitely sufficiently cool to mention: Brighton hosts the Mini Maker Faire.
