Science Museum Gets Arty, Atmospheric

The Science Museum will shortly open its new gallery ‘Atmosphere: Exploring Climate Science’. It seems incredible, really, that it’s taken them so long to have a permanent gallery on this most important of scientific areas. Still, this is a museum whose nether-corners haven’t been updated in 25 years.

As well as the usual mixture of interactive displays and exhibits, the new gallery will also house a changing programme of contemporary art, all inspired by the theme of climate change. First up is David Shrigley whose first piece will show a scaled-up drawing of a house of cards. “The metaphor I have used is quite a straightforward one: our atmosphere and environment are in very delicate balance; a balance that it could be disastrous for us to upset,” he explains.

Further installations are planned, including a visit from ‘Longplayer’, the 1000-year-long piece of music that was set going in at the end of 1999.
