Networking socially: Sci/med meet-ups abound in Boston

Social networking tends more toward the networking less toward the social. So, for those who prefer the latter, know that the “meet up” community is growing in Boston. And, based on those allied with Meetup.com, they come in all varieties. (Also check our calendar for other local science events — or to add your own.)

Let’s start with geeks and nerds. They say MIT students prefer “nerd” to “geek,” which is understandable since the word geek originally referred to a performer who bites off chicken’s heads. This, however, did not deter locals with “advanced degrees,” from starting their “”https://www.meetup.com/Professional-Geeky-Singles/“>professional geeky singles” meet up.

It’s time to focus on a social life as well as a career

Yes we’re new. Join us and build the community you want.

You’re in your 30’s or 40’s with a great career, maybe an advanced degree or two, but don’t have unlimited time to meet new people on a regular basis to date. You have the flexibility and ability to do some really cool things when you aren’t working but are missing someone to go with you. You work for a company that is known by just letters, an engineering firm, a software start up, a biotech company or something similar and would like to meet a person that understands the demands of your job because they have similar experiences and goals. You realize that there is more to life than 70 hour work weeks and are looking for a change. This group will schedule regular social events for after work drinks, dinners, games or other gatherings where you can meet singles in your area and industry. We can’t promise that you’ll meet a soulmate but you will expand your professional network. It doesn’t matter if you’re shy or gregarious, qualitative or quantitative, in R&D or sales, all professional singles are encouraged to join.

And, as reported here before, those with or without spouses or Ph.D.s are invited to join the very active “Nerd Fun” meet-up.

You like learning things, going to museums, science lectures, and you can’t get your regular crew to go with you.

Perhaps you went to engineering school, but you use hair conditioner anyway.

Maybe you got excited to hear that Universal is opening a Harry Potter theme park in Florida 2010 (!!!)

You’re intelligent and you have social skills, even tho you might have a video game or two on your hard drive.

If you’re willing to let your geek flag fly, please join us. Event suggestions encouraged.

And, if there’s something you want to go to that our organizers can’t make, we can post the event anyway to rally the Nerd Herd to keep you company. Just let us know.

Freelance biologists: DYI-Bio is for you:

Synthetic Biologists are making biology more modularized, predictable, and easier to engineer. DIYbiologists are finding ways to use synthetic biology with off-the-shelf tools and do-it-yourself techniques.

Our monthly meetings feature a short talk by an interesting speaker, a show-n-tell section where everyone can demo their cool projects – be it hardware, software, wetware, art, writing, whatever – followed by time for social networking and refreshments.

DIYbio is is a community in which burgeoning biological engineers can come together to learn and share ideas, bringing back that enthusiasm for science we experienced as kids. DIYbio promotes the responsible and safe practice of scientific techniques. We meet in the Boston area to discuss topics such as best practices, advances in related technology and market scope for new products.

Pros have their groups too, including the Life Sciences Networking & Professional Development

Welcome Life Science professionals!

This group will provide you a resource for networking and professional development. Monthly networking meetings, seminars and round table discussions will tap into our scientific community and provide you a wealth of contacts, knowledge, new friends and fun. As we continue to gain members, we will work towards setting up our monthly networking meetings.

No matter what your contribution is within our scientific community, we welcome you to the Nexus Project.

The Boston Biotech meet up is :A place for the biotech community to come together and “talk shop”.

Meet local Biotechnology Enthusiasts. Discuss healthcare, medical devices, cell biology, life science research, pharmaceuticals, and drug discovery start-ups that would be beneficial to society and the development of new technologies.

Computer Science Theoreticians have their own group.

If Godel, Turing and paradoxes (and even Rosser and Smullyan) turn you on, if you spend time reading about, thinking about, and even developing answers to the important unsolved problems of Theoretical Computer Science, then please join us to show that two or more heads ARE better than one (in humans even if not in Turing Machines.)

Interested in applying formal methods – Mathematics – to problems at work or at play? Bring them along and we’ll all have fun being the first to solve your puzzles for you.

Five new members this week – we’re now the biggest Computer Science Meet-Up on earth – tied with Wolfram!

Science in the Flesh models itself after toastmasters:

This meetup aims to develop participants’ ability to create compelling experiences which reveal some aspect of a scientific or technical subject. Science and technical subjects have a reputation for being dry and boring. It’s undeserved: we’re the ones making it dry and boring. Partly inspired by Toastmasters each session is focused on understanding the elements that combine to create powerful learning and teaching experiences, whether in demos or lectures If you are so enthusiastic, you want to start a company, try the The Biomedical Entrepreneur Club, which strives to enable entrepreneurship in life sciences and medicine throughout the globe. We are open to all members playing a role in biomedical entrepreneurship, from academics to product.

If that start up involves health information technology The Boston Health Care IT Professionals Group:

Bringing together Boston-area health care technology and clinical professionals interested in the challenges facing health care IT professionals today. That would include discussions around electronic health care records, Stimulus Act health care reform, integrating systems from vendors to “really” make them work together, and other topics of related interest. An important goal is to have members feature and present, informally, on topics of interest defined by the group and to have some fun doing it. This is a new group as of June 3, 2009, and I hope that it will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information, and the opportunity to learn and network in a relaxed atmosphere. See you there.

P.S. Vendors are welcome too, especially to sponsor meetings, but no sales pitches during meetings is our policy. Thanks for observing it.

Robots? Welcome, Boston Robotics Enthusiasts!

Meet other local Robotics Enthusiasts to discuss ideas, building techniques, and have fun! It doesn’t matter if you have lots of Robot friends, or are just in the dreaming phase, this is the place to find out what’s going on in the robotics community.Neuroscience?…and society

This group has two purposes. The first is to bring together established or emerging neuroscientists. A seond related purpose is to bring together those who are interested in the clinical, educational, medical, legal and ethical issues that might be related to the application of neuroscience to our societies and cultures.

Ecologists gather around Ocean River Wildlife Ecology Enthusiasts & Stewards!

Meet other local people interested in Ecology, environmental literacy, and savvy stewardship of our watersheds, rivers, coasts and oceans. Meet with us for greater personal involvement and relationships in conservation science, resource monitoring and protecting ecosystems. Citizens and environmental professionals who work toward sustainable human impact on the Earth are most welcome to meet for conversation, camaraderie, and fun. Join our dialogue that picks up where Rachel Carson leaves off to foster greater, more healthy and diverse communities both social and ecological. You may even choose to take local action with us to protect the natural commons, advance ecosystem-based management that is inclusive and participatory, and appreciate of wildlife.

“All at last return to the sea—to Oceanus, the ocean river, like the ever-flowing stream of time, the beginning and the end.” Rachel Carson, The Sea Around Us

Finally, if you have no interest in health or science and your spouse or partner dragged you here after med school, try —Boston Spouses of Medical Residents

I created this group in July 2007 when my wife and I moved to Boston for her to start her medial residency at MGH. I knew that I was not the only spouse who was new to the area and had a lot of free time while their partner was working away in a hospital. So I thought it would be nice if there were a meetup group for us, the significant others of residents, fellows, and attendings in the Boston area.

We have monthly dinners and sometimes other activities, and we are always open to suggestions. Not a support group per se, just a group of people in a similar situation.
