Stem cell battles continue

Just because the Legislature overrides a veto from the Governor trying to restrict stem cell research doesn’t mean that he can’t come back with another move. The Boston Globe reports today that the Public Health Council (appointed by Romney) approved regulations that local universities and research hospitals fear will criminalize certain work in stem cell research, going beyond what the Legislature intended when it passed the stem cell law and fought off Romney’s veto. Unfortunately, it’s not clear from the article how final these regulations are or what the Legislature can do about them. But it looks like the political fight is not yet over in MA over stem cell research.

Addendum August 31: The Globe follows up with this article. Not a big surprise, but the state legislature is a tad upset with the Romney regulations trying to close “loopholes” in the stem cell law.
