Franchising the Nature Network pub nights-call to action

I’m so proud of our Nature Network members! On completely their own initiative and enthusiasm, two groups of NN members, on opposite sides of the Atlantic, independent of each other, recently hosted their own successful Nature Network pub nights, inspired by the ones Matt and I put on in London and Boston (respectively). Read the dispatches from the Berlin and New York City events.

Well done everyone.

If you’re not in Boston, London, NYC or Berlin, don’t feel left out. Organize your own pub nights for local scientists and feel free to use Nature Network as the website to bring people in your area together and to spread the word. Let us know what you’re planning and we can help you promote your event.

Hmm, my attempts to get fellow Canada-based Networkers to join my group have not gone too well, but maybe the addition of alcoholic beverages to the mix would help!

I know of one other NNer in Sydney, and one in Brisbane (for those of you who don’t know the joggraphy, it’s an 11 hour drive).

    Might be rather quiet…

Richard, I’ll come over, with my one confirmed fellow Vancouver-based NNer. We’ll buy the drinks if you buy the airfares.

I think I might get burned on that deal – I’m not sure I’d be able to drink that much.

I could probably lend you a dinghy?

I think that most are somewhat “afraid” of Nature Network, thinking they need some sort of “credentials” or “publications” to join – I’m proof that neither is necessary 🙂

but Cath, I think we will prevail – I know at least one other NNer in Vancouver…

Yeah, if you think that scientists in general are slow to embrace “web2.0”, try Australian scientists. To my knowledge there are 4 of us in the entire country: myself, Richard, Andrew Perry and Matt Todd (of the Synaptic Leap). Since 2 of them are in Sydney and I’m there in a “spiritual home” sense, I’m sure we’ll catch up one of these days.

On a point of order, Neil, how many of those ‘Australian’ scientists are actually Australian. I’m a pommie bastard, as you will know.

I am, you are, we are Australian 🙂 You know, songs with vaguely-nationalistic overtones never brought a tear to my eye until I heard “I Still Call Australia Home”.

Oh right – I think one of them is.

I’m hoping Bora will join me in Cromer tomorrow for a couple of days, so we’ll have – at least temporarily – a NN social in scenic North Norfolk.

Vancourverites might want to contact Nicola Jones (n.jones@nature.com), _Nature_’s online news editor (write I, mysteriously).

Chessington World of Adventures remains on the agenda.

er – make that Vancouverites. I had got out of the habit of previewing entries without links.

For the NYC and Berlin groups and events, they started with only 2 or 3 really keen people, who then invited their friends and colleagues who weren’t already on NN to join. So you don’t have to wait for people to come to us on NN. You can go out and find them!

Corie is exactly right. More than 3/4 of the people at the nyc event had never been on NN until a week or so before the event.

Here’s the third Australian scientist “embracing web2.0” .. now we have 3/4 of them in this thread 🙂

Seriously .. there must be a set of potential NN pub nighters here in Melbourne, Australia, they are just hiding. In fact, searching for “Melbourne” finds me 8 NN members in Melbourne … one even works in my building, and I’ve never met them !

Melbourne? Where’s that then? Is it anywhere near Queanbeyan?

Yeah, I was a little harsh – searching NN for “australia” throws up 26 people. Although oddly, I’m not one of them. Request for a “search people by location”, please.

I see Sydney has got to you Richard. Soon you’ll be ditching science for a job in the city and lusting after harbourside properties 🙂

Geez Richard, is that you? And a boar? I’m not sure what I find more unsettling…the size of the animal, or the picture of you with a big gun in one hand and a beer in the other! 🙂

Corie, hey now. If you are going to bragging about our efforts in NYC, can we talk you into throwing some ‘support’ our way for the next pub crawl? PS. we are tentatively scheduling it for May 15 and looks to be ever bigger. Cornell, Hunter (not Richard and his dead boar, but the school)and Rockefeller are sending some ambassadors.
