Thirty, as they say, is\u00a0the new twenty.<\/p>\n<p>In these three eventful decades,\u00a0DBT\u2019s achievements have been many, in terms\u00a0of the science it has enabled, the policies it\u00a0has introduced, as well as the linkages it has\u00a0established across disciplines and countries.\u00a0DBT\u2019s many forays into biological sciences\u00a0education and its societal contributions have\u00a0also bolstered its position as a formidable\u00a0science-faring body in the country \u2013 as a\u00a0confident young global icon who looks to\u00a0the future, armed with a dynamic policy\u00a0framework, the spirit of adventure and ample\u00a0room for self-criticism.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nature India<\/em> is happy to be associated with DBT\u00a0at this historic time of transition, a time when\u00a0India\u2019s science is making waves globally. This \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.natureasia.com\/en\/nindia\/pdf\/biotechnology-an-agent-for-sustainable-socio-\">special volume<\/a> (freely downloadable from the Special Issues section of Nature India) marking DBT\u2019s 30 years was released today. The volume features\u00a0commentaries from leading names in biological\u00a0sciences in India and across the world. The\u00a0milestones of DBT have been highlighted in\u00a0a commentary \u2018<em>The changing face of biological\u00a0sciences in India<\/em>\u2019 and a short note \u2018<em>Three\u00a0decades of biotech solutions<\/em>\u2019 by two of the many\u00a0visionary past leaders of the department. DBT\u2019s\u00a0present chief outlines the vision for the future in\u00a0an interview titled \u2018<em>As India\u2019s economy grows, we\u00a0will have more support for science<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The articles compiled in this issue range from\u00a0looking at the state of basic biotech research\u00a0in the health sector (malaria, TB, allied\u00a0microbes and stem cells) to green medicine\u00a0and frugal medical innovations; from biosafety\u00a0of India\u2019s laboratories to the looming debate\u00a0over genetically modified crops; and from\u00a0biodiversity to big data.<\/p>\n<p>The future of science\u00a0and science-led entrepreneurship lies in an\u00a0interdisciplinary, global approach; in frugal<br \/>\ninnovations; in providing local solutions to the\u00a0world\u2019s problems. DBT, which has been playing\u00a0the catalyst in all these areas successfully, now\u00a0has an enviable 30-year benefit of hindsight to\u00a0reflect upon and open newer doors to newer\u00a0challenges.<\/p>\n<p>As media partner, <em>Nature India<\/em>, a showcase of\u00a0India\u2019s science, is proud to collaborate with DBT\u00a0in its newest mission of disseminating science\u00a0better.
