During mating, the male grasps the female at the back of the head or on the prothorax, and the female curls her abdomen under her body to pick up sperm from the male&#8217;s secondary genitalia at the front of his abdomen, forming the &#8220;heart&#8221; or &#8220;wheel&#8221; posture &#8212; such an apt symbolism for love and procreation. It&#8217;s a pity that loss of\u00a0wetlands\u00a0is threatening the population of these beautiful dragonflies around the world.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The image was shot in October 2015 near the vast wetland of Mangalajodi in Odisha.<\/p>\n<p>Fantastic catch, <strong>Deepak! <\/strong>And welcome to the top ten. All the very best for the top slots!<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Nature India<\/em> photo contest is in it\u2019s third year. It has received an overwhelming response with hundreds of\u00a0entries from around the world. The theme for 2016 was simply \u2018Nature\u2019 but, as always, we were looking for an inherent connect of the photos with science.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Nature India<\/em>\u00a0editorial and design team is sure having a tough time selecting just three winners, who stand a chance of seeing their entries grace the cover page of one of our forthcoming print publications. The winner and two runners-up will receive\u00a0a copy of the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>just released\u00a0<strong>Nature India Special Annual Volume\u00a0<\/strong>and a <strong>bag of goodies<\/strong>\u00a0from Springer\u00a0Nature.<\/p>\n<p>As a run up to the final announcement, we are rolling out the top 10 finalists of the photo competition (in no particular order of merit) over the next few days\u00a0on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/indigenus\">Indigenus<\/a> blog as well as our social media platforms (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NatureInd\">Twitter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/npgindia\">Facebook<\/a>).\u00a0The final results will be announced in\u00a0late <strong>December\u00a02016<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nature India\u2019<\/em>s final decision to chose the winner will be partly influenced by\u00a0the engagement and reception he\/she receives here at the Indigenus blog, on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NatureInd\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/npgindia\">Facebook<\/a>.
