Entrepreneurship and taking control of your own careers are the themes for this years’ Boston Naturejobs Career Expo.
The Naturejobs Career Expo in Boston is only 2 days away so it’s time for you to get your skates on and prepare yourself for the event. We’ve got a fantastic line-up of speakers this year, including Professor Robert Langer from MIT, entrepreneur Steve Blank and a whole host of other great influencers in panels and workshops.
Some important information:
Venue: Back Bay Events Center, 180 Berkeley St, Boston, MA 02116, United States
Date: May 20th 2015
Time: 9am – 6pm
Professor Langer and Steve Blank will both have an element of entrepreneurship in their talks. Langer’s entrepreneurial attitude has allowed him to see opportunities and ventures where others might not have (hence allowing him to take control of his own career! (He has over 1,080 patents worldwide, many of which have been licensed or sublicensed to over 300 pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology and medical device companies.) Steve Blank has worked with hundred of scientists to see if they can get the right entrepreneurial attitude and get their ideas and products off the ground using a Lean method. I’ll be asking him why this attitude is so important, what the Lean method is and how scientists can adopt it.
I hope that throughout the day many of you that come will feel inspired by the speakers we have lined up for you, and that you too will come away looking to take control of your own careers. To make sure that you all get the most of the event and that you can start taking control of your own careers, here are a few tips on how to prepare for the event and navigate your way around whilst you’re there.
Before you arrive, make sure that you:
1. Swot up. You can have a look at the event schedule here, you can find more information about the panel discussions and workshops here, and finally here is a list of the companies coming to the exhibition.
2. Prioritise. Write lists of who you would like to speak to whilst you’re at the event. It’s unlikely you’ll have time to meet every employer so prioritise who you want to speak to the most.
3. Update your CV and bring a few copies as some companies will accept CVs on the day.
4. Prepare questions. For each company/person you’d like to speak to, have a think about some questions you’d like to ask them.
5. Look the part. Consider the careers fair as a series of mini-interviews: you want to impress everyone. No baggy jeans with holes in please.
Whilst you’re at the event:
1. The early bird catches the worm. If you want time with the recruiters it’s best to get in early before the mad rush. Plus you’ll also have time to orientate yourself at the venue and familiarise yourself with the programme. (There will also be an app that you can use!)
2. Be patient. If a recruiter you want to talk to is busy in conversation, go away and come back when you can see that they’re free.
3. Radiate confidence but show humility. Make sure that you are professional and listen to what is being said. You don’t want to appear as if you know it all.
4. Eat and drink. It can be exhausting talking to people all day, so don’t forget to take a break after speaking to two or three recruiters.
5. Make an impact. Give potential employers your information (CV, business cards) in a hassle-free way to make their lives easier.
6. Stand out. Without overdoing it, I’ve always found that wearing something memorable that sets you apart from the competition.
7. Smile. Most importantly, have fun!
For those of you that haven’t signed up yet but would still like to attend, you can still register for the event
