Fantastic. Someone may well have already posted some of this. But you can still shape and guide a great deal of the accessible online information about you \u2014 and the image that this information creates \u2014 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/naturejobs\/science\/articles\/10.1038\/nj7340-667a\">actively managing the content<\/a> over which you have some control.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true if you\u2019re looking for a job. It\u2019s safe to assume that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/naturejobs\/2012\/03\/27\/linkedin-tips-for-jobseekers\">potential employers will look you up online <\/a>and so you need to have control over the information presented about you.<\/p>\n<p>LinkedIn is still one of the most highly used sites for finding out about jobs through your virtual network \u2013 and occasionally getting one. You\u2019ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/naturejobs\/2012\/12\/20\/linkedin-tips-for-scientists\">make your profile look good<\/a> &#8212; and you\u2019ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/naturejobs\/2012\/12\/07\/ten-words-to-avoid-on-your-online-job-profile\">find a way to stand out from the rest of the pack.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not seeking employment, though, social media is still a hugely <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/naturejobs\/2015\/09\/07\/social-media-the-art-of-self-promotion\/\">powerful and useful tool<\/a>. It can help you reach networks of like-minded scientists, build research collaborations and even make friends<\/p>\n<p>Lots of your colleagues find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/online-collaboration-scientists-and-the-social-network-1.15711#\/\">particular sites to be key venues <\/a>when they want to engage in collaborative discussion, peer-review papers, share negative results that might never otherwise be published, and even upload raw data sets<\/p>\n<p>And through these sites, you can build a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/naturejobs\/science\/articles\/10.1038\/nj7538-263a\">powerful virtual network <\/a>that will yield opportunities, information and advice.
