This is changing rapidly, and it\u2019s now more viable than ever to start a science based company straight out of a PhD. Compared to my peers I was now four years behind with little if any real world \u2018business\u2019 skills. At the time this came as a shock, but I now know just how common this feeling is.<\/p>\n<p>I applied for a job at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimperialinnovations.co.uk\">Imperial Innovations<\/a>\u00a0which builds companies around academic technology, mainly because this seemed like a good bridge between the two worlds I was interested in. Reporting directly to Tony Hickson, Managing Director of Technology Transfer, this was a real case of being chucked in at the deep end, but within the first couple of months I learnt something surprising; start-ups aren\u2019t normal functioning businesses at all. They\u2019re searches for something that might work, and that is something I did know a little bit about.<\/p>\n<p>Start-ups require incredible determination and endurance, the creativity to think about things beyond current knowledge, to build empathy with other stakeholders, the ability to tell a good story, the ability to excel at something that virtually no one else does, and finally the discipline to take an iterative, hypothesis-led approach.<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">\u00a0Yes, start-ups require almost exactly the same skills as science.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>If you\u2019re not convinced,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsf.indiebio.co%2Fphd-perfect-startup%2F\">read this post by Lenny Teytelman<\/a>\u00a0which describes his gradual realisation of just how perfectly placed he was to found protocols.io.<\/p>\n<p>So what happens when you do find something that works and it becomes a proper business? This has opened the door for anyone to test out ideas for software. Science, however, remains expensive. This is also about to change as experiments become automated by a combination of AI and data-driven approaches alongside robotic platforms such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.transcriptic.com%2F\">Transcriptic<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.synbicite.com%2F\">SynbiCITE<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2Fresearch-labs-jump-to-the-cloud-1404168036\">Even animal labs<\/a>\u00a0are emerging in the cloud.<\/p>\n<h2>There are a huge number of grants to get you started<\/h2>\n<p>What about your living costs and the times that you still really need to be hands on in your own lab? This is where translation grants have come to the rescue. In the UK virtually all of the research councils (<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbsrc.ac.uk%2Fnews%2Fpeople-skills-training%2F2014%2F140304-pr-anniversary-future-leader-fellowships%2F\">BBSRC<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.epsrc.ac.uk%2Ffunding%2Fhowtoapply%2Fpreparing%2Fwriting%2Fresourcesimpact%2F\">EPSRC<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwellcome.ac.uk%2Ffunding%2Ftranslation-fund\">Wellcome<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nocri.nihr.ac.uk%2Fservices%2Ftranslational-research-partnerships%2F\">NIHR<\/a>) and most of the Royal Academies (<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.raeng.org.uk%2Fgrants-and-prizes%2Fsupport-for-research%2Fraeng-research-fellowship\">RAEng<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rsc.org%2F\">RSC<\/a>) provide grants as well as the Government (Innovate UK). Science Mag provides a huge list of US grant options <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/careers\/where-search-funding\">including translational grants<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/\">Horizon 2020<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Feit.europa.eu%2F\">\u00a0Knowledge and innovation Centres (KICs<\/a>) are key in the EU. These are an incredible resource that let you stay in your lab and explore potential ideas. And the amount of grant funding can be significant \u2013 in the pre-accelerator at Imperial College the average grant funding came in at \u00a3250k with several exceeding \u00a31m.<\/p>\n<h2>Later stage investment is increasingly focused on science<\/h2>\n<p>Even five years ago it was incredibly hard to get funding for science-based ventures. Now, the most successful investors are increasingly coming to the realisation that searching for the low hanging fruit in web-tech is nearing the point of diminishing returns. There\u2019s nothing quite like learning from your own mistakes, but avoiding mistakes has never been easier by learning from the plethora of blogs, podcasts and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs \u2013 see <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.udacity.com%2Fcourse%2Fhow-to-build-a-startup--ep245\">Udacity\u2019s course on building lean start-ups<\/a>, for example), or simply getting in touch with entrepreneurs in the same field. Scientific knowledge is increasingly open sourced and even the best software frameworks are given away for free (e.g.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tensorflow.org%2F\">Tensor Flow<\/a>). Even industry is now much more open, as companies are increasingly keen to find the innovation that isn\u2019t happening within their own walls.<\/p>\n<h2>Shortcuts to success<\/h2>\n<p>There are now shortcuts\u00a0to surrounding yourself with the necessary expertise, getting access to potential customers, and getting enough money to try things out on the start-up scene. This includes full time ground-up venture creation programmes like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deepscienceventures.com\/?utm_source=NatureJobs&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=dsv2\">Deep Science Ventures<\/a> which helps UK-based scientists and engineers find likeminded co-founders and hidden opportunities that match their interests and skillset, in order to build high-tech start-ups from scratch; competitions like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsummit.hello-tomorrow.org%2F\">Hello Tomorrow<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fmasschallenge.org%2F\">Mass Challenge<\/a>;\u00a0and programmes like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fthielfellowship.org%2F\">Thiel fellowships<\/a>\u00a0(US), <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Foxbridgebiotech.com%2F\">Oxbridge Biotech Roundtable<\/a>\u00a0(Global), and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.indiebio.co%2F\">Indie Bio<\/a> (San Francisco and Ireland).<\/p>\n<h2>It\u2019s probably the lowest risk option you have<\/h2>\n<p>Starting a high-tech company is probably the hardest thing you can do: the learning curve is incredibly steep, and that should be expected from one of the few ways you can really focus on the science and make a huge impact on the world.<\/p>\n<p>We all know start-ups are highly likely to fail, so saying this route is low risk sounds contradictory. But bear with me. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fs3.amazonaws.com%2Fstartupcompass-public%2FStartupGenomeReport2_Why_Startups_Fail_v2.pdf\">Start-up Genome Report<\/a>\u00a092% of high-tech start-ups fail. The report is worth a read because many of the reasons that companies fail are largely avoidable; it\u2019s rarely that the tech is too tough to build. If you can get as far as investment this number falls to around 40%, and your chance of making it big within that\u200asits at\u200aaround 10% (<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpitchbook.com%2F\">Pitchbook<\/a>). This adds up to a 0.48% success rate overall.\u00a0Interestingly, this is the same proportion of <a href=\"https:\/\/academia.stackexchange.com\/questions\/17431\/what-ratio-of-phd-graduates-in-stem-fields-ultimately-end-up-as-tenured-profes\">PhD students that reach professorship<\/a>. For more tips on how to avoid common traps, it\u2019s worth a read of the summary of our recent talk on <a href=\"https:\/\/labiotech.eu\/build-successful-biotech-start-up\/\">how NOT to start a science start-up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That clearly sounds dismal, but it doesn\u2019t matter \u2013 as long as you can cover your costs while you try then your upside is nearly unlimited, whilst your downside is virtually non-existent. After a year as an intern, and inspired by the companies he was working with, he left to start a content aggregation app; it was based on impressive technology but never quite found the right use case.<\/p>\n<p>After a year he stopped pursuing the idea and walked straight in to a role reporting to the head of technology strategy at Amazon. Likewise, James Gollings attempted to turn his master\u2019s project (an at-home filter for removing the lactose from milk) into a company. The science worked, but the economics didn\u2019t stack up against mass-produced lacto-free milk. He took that experience and went on to get a job at one of the world\u2019s leading consultancies.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just commercial jobs that get excited if they see you\u2019ve tried your hand at start-ups: we\u2019ve worked with several postdocs who found it was just the boost they needed to move on to tenured positions.
