Doing it on your own is even more so. Having someone to talk to and share your concerns\/challenges\/ideas with can be extremely beneficial. The official term for someone like that is a Mentor. At the <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">Naturejobs<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\"> Career Expo in London this September, a panel of four academics got together to discuss their wildly different careers:\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em\" title=\"Jim Usherwood, RVC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rvc.ac.uk\/about\/our-people\/jim-usherwood\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Usherwood from the Royal Veterinary College<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">\u00a0only spends his time doing research.\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em\" title=\"Anita Hall, Imperial College London\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/anita.hall\/teaching.html\" target=\"_blank\">Anita Hall from Imperial College London<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">\u00a0only does teaching.\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em\" title=\"Lorraine Kerr, Edinburgh\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synthsys.ed.ac.uk\/people\/profile\/lorraine-kerr\" target=\"_blank\">Lorraine Kerr<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em\" title=\"Louise Horsfall, Edingburgh\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synthsys.ed.ac.uk\/people\/profile\/louise-horsfall\" target=\"_blank\">Louise Horsfall<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">\u00a0from the University of Edinburgh split their time (with different percentages) between research, teaching, business and management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of the questions our audience posed to them was: \u201cHow important is it to have a mentor in your academic career?\u201d Here are their responses.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How important is it to have a mentor in your academic career?\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EjVK0N3cCIA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Usherwood suggests speaking to the postdocs &#8211; they&#8217;re the ones that do the research and will give you a &#8220;reality check&#8221;. By approaching many postdocs you can get lots of different opinions.<\/p>\n<p>Hall has found that having a mentor to whom you can relate is very valuable. Don&#8217;t reach for the Nobel Laureate, go for someone who&#8217;s done one more postdoc position than you, or who has started their postdoc after their PhD.<\/p>\n<p>Horsfall disagrees with Usherwood: &#8220;if you&#8217;re aiming for an academic position, you don&#8217;t want to go to a postdoc because they haven&#8217;t got the academic position either.&#8221; She suggests working with the university mentor schemes that are provided by universities. &#8220;It&#8217;s just an encouragement from somebody who is outside your immediate situation. They can give a different perspective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mentors are a big discussion topic in the science career space.
