UN secretary general to quit climate diplomacy

ban ki moon.jpgBan Ki-Moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), is reportedly leaving the arena of international climate politics.

Ban has in the past passionately warned world leaders of the threat of global warming. He was involved in the UN climate talks in Bali in 2007 and in Copenhagen in 2009.

But the de-facto failure of the Copenhagen meeting and the slow progress of international climate negotiations since seem to have left their mark. As the Guardian reports, Ban will no longer be involved in the negotiations leading up to the next UN climate summit in December in Durban, South Africa.

The paper quotes senior UN officials as saying that Ban will in the future focus on broader issues of clean energy and sustainable development.
