As a Network full of scientists, it’s small wonder that we regularly get excited by the research behind the Nobel prizes. M. William Lensch, on The Red Pill blog, even devised a Nobel Nostradamus Pool in an attempt to predict the winners. In 2007, he correctly guessed that Oliver Smithies, Mario Capecchi and Martin Evans would scoop the 2007 Physiology or Medicine prize for work leading to mouse knockouts, and was bang on the money two years later in predicting that Szostak, Greider and Blackburn would get the same prize for their work on telomerase and telomeres. Science is a messy game, with difficult career paths, less-than-munificent pay packets and long hard toils that often end with unpromising results. To flourish in these trying conditions, all scientists need role models, inspiration and good mentors. Mentoring is one of the central themes of the annual Lindau Noble Laureate Meetings, which brings together young researchers and Nobel prizewinners. Blogs Career issues were fairly prominent on Nature Network this week. Wilson Pok contributed an excellent post about the difficulties faced by PhD researchers pursuing postdoc positions, prompted by a recent careers seminar: Some speakers spoke of how they got to where they are now.
