Do let us know what you find most useful!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was March of last year when we\u00a0<a title=\"Announcing Science Online NYC\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/ofschemesandmemes\/2011\/03\/17\/announcing-science-online-nyc-sonyc\" target=\"_blank\">announce<\/a>d\u00a0a new monthly discussion series called Science Online NYC (SoNYC), organised by\u00a0<a title=\"@LouWoodley\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/LouWoodley\" target=\"_blank\">Lou Woodley<\/a>\u00a0from nature.com, along with\u00a0<a title=\"@j_timmer\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/j_timmer\" target=\"_blank\">John Timmer<\/a>\u00a0of Ars Technica and\u00a0<a title=\"@JeanneGarb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/JeanneGarb\" target=\"_blank\">Jeanne Garbarino<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"@bonnerj\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/bonnerj\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Bonner<\/a>\u00a0of Rockefeller University.<\/p>\n<p>SoNYC will soon celebrate its first birthday (you can read more about the celebrations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/ofschemesandmemes\/2012\/03\/28\/celebrating-science-online-nycs-first-birthday\">here<\/a>) and now, a year later, the SoNYC model is spreading to other cities! This week we will see the inaugural Science Online Seattle (SoSEA), Science Online Vancouver (SoVan) and Science Online Bay Area (SOBA).<\/p>\n<p>The landscape of science communication is a dynamic and engaging place to be and the aim of SoNYC is to provide a regular forum for discussing topics related to communicating and carrying out science online. Expanding the SoNYC model to other locations in the US and Canada means that even more people can join in these valuable discussions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>SoSEA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The discussion series taking place in Seattle (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/search\/%23soSEA\">#SoSEA<\/a>) is co-organised by Liz Neeley, Jen Davison and Brian Glanz (you can find out more about the organisers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/ofschemesandmemes\/2012\/03\/20\/announcing-science-online-seattle\">here<\/a>). Their first event is taking place today, Monday April 16th and will consider:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Shared Science: new realities for research and outreach in a networked world<\/em><\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The digital age is profoundly reshaping our information landscape, challenging us with an unprecedented opportunity to transform how we conduct and communicate research. Science Online Seattle will kick off with an exploration of what exactly it means to do science in a digital world. How does it work? Who is involved? What are their incentives? Where do we go from here? She will talk about her vision for opening up the science of the University of Washington College of the Environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brian Glanz<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/opensciencefederation.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/opensciencefederation.com\/\">Open Science Federation<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/brianglanz\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/brianglanz\">Brian<\/a>\u00a0will discuss\u00a0reproducibility, extensibility, affordability, accessibility and science at the speed of the internet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Firas Khatib<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Seth Cooper<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a title=\"https:\/\/fold.it\/portal\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fold.it\/portal\/\">Foldit<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/bakerpg\/drupal\/node\/386\/\" href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/bakerpg\/drupal\/node\/386\/\">Firas<\/a>\u00a0is a biomedical research scientist and\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.cs.washington.edu\/homes\/scooper\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.washington.edu\/homes\/scooper\/\">Seth<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0creative director of the\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.centerforgamescience.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforgamescience.com\/\">Center for Game Science<\/a>\u00a0at UW. ScienceOnline Bay Area is co-organized by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceonlinebayarea.org\/members\/physicsdavid\/\">David Harris<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceonlinebayarea.org\/members\/williamgunn\/\">William Gunn<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceonlinebayarea.org\/meganmansell\">Megan Mansell Williams<\/a>, and Aurelie Coulon.<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceonlinebayarea.org\/\">\u00a0<\/a>The first topic for discussion will be:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Data Visualization and Data Journalism in Science<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Although not yet exactly common in science reporting, data journalism and data visualization are a natural fit to the material. Peter\u2019s journalism has drawn on diverse sources of data, from earthquake records, through citations in stem cell research, to his own genome.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Michael Porath\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/poezn\">Michael Porath<\/a>\u00a0heads up the Engineering team at\u00a0<a title=\"Visual.ly\" href=\"https:\/\/visual.ly\/\">Visual.ly<\/a>. The startup creates tools which aim to democratize the creation of data visualization. Michael has a background in Software Engineering with a focus on working with large-scale data sets. He holds a Masters in Information Management and Systems from UC Berkeley, with a specialization in Data Visualization. Michael also teaches a graduate-level course in Information Visualization at the School of Information at UC Berkeley.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Shane Shifflett\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baycitizen.org\/profiles\/shane-shifflett\/\">Shane Shifflett<\/a>\u00a0is a software developer and reporter for\u00a0<a title=\"The Bay Citizen\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baycitizen.org\/\">The Bay Citizen<\/a>\u00a0who learned how to interrogate data while telling a story at Northwestern\u2019s Medill School. There, he wrote about a drug-addled prostitute\u2019s 300th arrest and the unforgiving criminal justice system which fails its inmates. He also reported on the Chicago Police Department\u2019s wasteful deployment of cameras across its city.
