Do let us know what you find most useful!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>#ReachingOutSci and SoNYC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday evening, we hosted the<a href=\"https:\/\/sonyc12.eventbrite.com\/\">\u00a0twelfth instalmen<\/a>t\u00a0of the monthly Science Online NYC (SoNYC)\u00a0discussion series.\u00a0For this month\u2019s event, the topic for debate was,<a href=\"https:\/\/sonyc12.eventbrite.com\/\">\u00a0Reaching out of the ivory tower<\/a>.\u00a0To prepare for June\u2019s event, Soapbox Science hosted a series of guest posts.\u00a0Over the last two weeks, scientists, writers, enthusiasts, communicators, events organizers, policy makers, lecturers and even a comedian, shared details about how they engage and reach out to the public.\u00a0Find a short summary of every guest post, plus related posts elsewhere in the blogosphere,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/ofschemesandmemes\/2012\/06\/07\/summary-of-the-reachingoutsci-series\">here<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Find a Storify from Thursday&#8217;s event <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/ofschemesandmemes\/2012\/06\/08\/junes-sonyc-reaching-out-of-the-ivory-tower-sonyc-reachingoutsci\">here <\/a>and check out some of the take-home messages in the screenshot below. The topics on discussion will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is open access?<\/li>\n<li>Why is it important?<\/li>\n<li>What can we do to make journals open access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>The panel will include:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heather Piwowar<\/strong>\u00a0a postdoc at Duke University in the Dept of Zoology\u00a0at UBC. \u00a0S<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heather Morrison<\/strong>\u00a0a well-known international open access advocate and practitioner of open scholarship,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lesley Evans Ogden<\/strong>\u00a0a freelance science journalist and the Vancouver media officer for the Science Media Centre of Canada.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Joy Kirchner <\/strong>The Scholarly Communications Coordinator at University of British Columbia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Each SoVAN event is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceonlinevancouver.com\/sovan-live\/\">live-streamed<\/a>\u00a0to give as many people as possible the chance to take part in the debate, so you can tune in online if you can&#8217;t attend in person.\u00a0You can also check out the SoVAN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceonlinevancouver.com\/\">website\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0SoVAN is also on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ScienceOnlineVancouver\">Facebook\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0on<a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/107641254647936320978\/posts?hl=en\">\u00a0Google+<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>SoSEA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>ScienceOnlineSeattle&#8217;s (SoSEA&#8217;s) next event will be co-hosted by the Seattle Science Festival and will take place on the 13th June, from\u00a021:30 at\u00a04507 Brooklyn Ave NE.\u00a0The event will focus on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/changingplanetconversations.eventbrite.com\/\">Conversations About Our Changing Planet: Observations, Models and Implications<\/a><\/strong>. Three panelists will give short, TED-style talks on \u201cthe dynamic Earth system and climate, focusing on observations, modeling, policies and linkages to energy and regional impacts in the Pacific Northwest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the panel session, in the Governor\u2019s Room at Hotel Deca, there will also be an afterparty starting at 9:30pm.<\/p>\n<p>Each SoSEA event is live-streamed to give as many people as possible the chance to take part in the debate.
