Communities Happenings\u00a0<\/a>is a weekly post with news of interest to NPG\u2019s online communities. The aim is to provide this info in one handy summary. Lindau begins\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The annual Lindau Nobel laureate meeting on Lake Constance has just started. \u00a0Running from 1st – 6th July, the event is an opportunity for young researchers from around the world to meet with Nobel laureates in science. This is the 62nd Lindau Meeting and, just in time for the updates on the Higgs Boson hunt, it is focused on Physics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As we have done for the past two years,\u00a0Nature<\/em>\u00a0is going to be covering this year\u2019s\u00a0Lindau Nobel Laureates meeting<\/a>\u00a0on the Lindau Nobel Community site<\/a>\u00a0where you can find blog posts, photos and othere online conversations.\u00a0We’ll also be rounding up some of the content here on Of Schemes and Memes, as we did last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lindau\u00a0preparations \u00a0#mentoringsci<\/strong><\/p>\n

Moer conent that ties in with the Lindau meeting is the latest\u00a0Soapbox Science mini-series<\/a>\u00a0which focuses on the role of mentors in science.<\/a>\u00a0So far we have heard from a mix of mentors, mentees and projects set up to support scientific mentoring. \u00a0The latest\u00a0post\u00a0is by\u00a0Vince Knight, a lecturer in the School of Mathematics at Cardiff University.\u00a0In his commentary, he\u00a0admits, “I\u2019m just not clever<\/a>” recalling his mentoring experiences and the impact his phsics teacher,\u00a0Melle Tayrac, had on him:<\/p>\n

I am proud of my academic achievements but am utterly convinced that my \u2018ability\u2019 has very little to do with any of them. I believe that all my achievements are the result of hard work inspired by Melle Tayrac. I\u2019ve spoken to her only once since then and tried to convey the impact she had on my life, but I\u2019m not sure she understood. What I do know is that without her guidance I would have had a very different life.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Save the date! Science Online London 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year, we\u2019re delighted to be hosted by the Wellcome Trust and the event will take place at the\u00a0Wellcome Collection Conference Centre<\/a>\u00a0on Euston Road.
