On the evening of August 20th, we hosted the\u00a0thirteenth installment<\/a>\u00a0of the monthly Science Online NYC (SoNYC)\u00a0discussion series, held in collaboration with the New York Academy of Sciences. The focus of the evening was the science PhD \u2013 Does the current PhD system need revamping to better equip researchers to continue in academia or to pursue other careers after graduating?\u00a0You can find a Storify collating the online conversation\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Panel member Elizabeth Bass,<\/a> a professor of journalism at SUNY Stony Brook, who runs their Center for Communicating Science, talked in\u00a0detail\u00a0about the ways scientists can improve their communication skills.<\/p>\n

She coined herself as a “token non-scientist”\u00a0and explained that Stony Brook makes\u00a0strides\u00a0in teaching scientists how to improve their communication abilities. \u00a0She went onto to\u00a0explain\u00a0that\u00a0there is a need for more people to communicate science for policy and important decision making.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Following on from her talk, Elizabeth has put together a useful list of resources for scientists who would like to communicate better.<\/p>\n
