{"id":9727,"date":"2014-01-08T15:49:12","date_gmt":"2014-01-08T15:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/ofschemesandmemes\/?p=9727"},"modified":"2014-01-10T11:24:41","modified_gmt":"2014-01-10T11:24:41","slug":"curtis-brainard-appointed-as-new-blogs-editor-at-scientific-american","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/ofschemesandmemes\/2014\/01\/08\/curtis-brainard-appointed-as-new-blogs-editor-at-scientific-american","title":{"rendered":"Curtis Brainard appointed as new blogs editor at Scientific American"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Scientific American (<\/i>part of Nature Publishing Group) has today announced the appointment of Blogs Editor Curtis Brainard.<\/p>\n<p>Brainard, previously a staff writer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Columbia Journalism Review<\/i><\/a>, will manage and further develop the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Scientific American<\/i> Blog Network<\/a>. \u201cScience blogs are a vital part of the modern media industry, and it\u2019s an honor to be joining an organization that has done so much for them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Brainard will serve as moderator for the community, encourage discussion and facilitate the exchange of ideas with both the bloggers and\u00a0<i>Scientific American<\/i>\u00a0readers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Curtis is a thoughtful and well respected member of the science writing community,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Scientific American<\/i><\/a>\u00a0Editor-in-Chief Mariette DiChristina. &#8220;We look forward to working with him to expand our community interactions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a staff writer for the <i>Columbia Journalism Review, <\/i>he covered science, environment and medical news. In 2008, he launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/the_observatory\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Observatory<\/a>,\u00a0<i>Columbia Journalism Review<\/i>&#8216;s first fulltime department dedicated to critically analyzing science coverage in the media as well as the opportunities and challenges facing science journalists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to helping\u00a0<i>Scientific American<\/i>\u00a0make its blogging community stronger and more engaging than ever,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Brainard is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasw.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Science Writers<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sej.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Society of Environmental Journalists<\/a>. In 2013, he was elected to serve on the executive board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfsj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Federation of Science Journalists<\/a>. Brainard has written for\u00a0<i>The New York Times<\/i>,\u00a0<i>The Washington Post<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>The New Yorker<\/i>.
