Scientific American (<\/i>part of Nature Publishing Group) has today announced the appointment of Blogs Editor Curtis Brainard.<\/p>\n

Brainard, previously a staff writer at Columbia Journalism Review<\/i><\/a>, will manage and further develop the Scientific American<\/i> Blog Network<\/a>. \u201cScience blogs are a vital part of the modern media industry, and it\u2019s an honor to be joining an organization that has done so much for them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Brainard will serve as moderator for the community, encourage discussion and facilitate the exchange of ideas with both the bloggers and\u00a0Scientific American<\/i>\u00a0readers.<\/p>\n

“Curtis is a thoughtful and well respected member of the science writing community,” says Scientific American<\/i><\/a>\u00a0Editor-in-Chief Mariette DiChristina. “We look forward to working with him to expand our community interactions.”<\/p>\n

As a staff writer for the Columbia Journalism Review, <\/i>he covered science, environment and medical news. In 2008, he launched The Observatory<\/a>,\u00a0Columbia Journalism Review<\/i>‘s first fulltime department dedicated to critically analyzing science coverage in the media as well as the opportunities and challenges facing science journalists.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look forward to helping\u00a0Scientific American<\/i>\u00a0make its blogging community stronger and more engaging than ever,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

Brainard is a member of the National Association of Science Writers<\/a> and the Society of Environmental Journalists<\/a>. In 2013, he was elected to serve on the executive board of the World Federation of Science Journalists<\/a>. Brainard has written for\u00a0The New York Times<\/i>,\u00a0The Washington Post<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0The New Yorker<\/i>. He holds master’s degrees in environmental science and journalism from Columbia University in New York City, where he is an adjunct faculty member at the Graduate School of Journalism, home of the Pulitzer Prizes.<\/p>\n

Scientific American<\/i>\u00a0launched the Blog Network in 2011.<\/p>\n
