{"id":2485,"date":"2014-12-09T12:14:53","date_gmt":"2014-12-09T12:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/scientificdata\/?p=2485"},"modified":"2014-12-09T12:14:53","modified_gmt":"2014-12-09T12:14:53","slug":"scientific-data-outreach-in-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/scientificdata\/2014\/12\/09\/scientific-data-outreach-in-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"<em>Scientific Data<\/em> outreach in Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><i>Scientific Data<\/i> and Nature Publishing Group\u2019s open data initiatives have been presented to Japanese audiences through several recent events. <ins cite=\"mailto:Matthew%20Ward\" datetime=\"2014-12-03T15:01\"><\/ins><\/p>\n<h2>59th annual meeting of Japanese Society of Human Genetics<\/h2>\n<p>On 22 November, a luncheon seminar was arranged during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeplan.co.jp\/jshg59-gene21\/\">the 59th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Human Genetics<\/a>, co-sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/jhg\/index.html\">Japanese Society of Human Genetics<\/a> (JSHG) and Nature Publishing Group. The seminar, \u2018Scholarly Communication in Open Research era \u2013 open data and data deposition with example of <i>Scientific Data<\/i> and<i> Human Genome Variation<\/i>\u2019, discussed trends in the open data movement that prompted the launch of two open access journals (<i>Human Genome Variation<\/i> is co-published by JSHG and Nature Publishing Group).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hideya Kawaji, of RIKEN Preventive Medicine &amp; Diagnosis Innovation Program (PMI) and RIKEN Advanced Center for Computing and Communication (ACCC), and an Editorial Board Member of <i>Scientific Data,<\/i> presented the journal at the event. Dr Kawaji\u2019s excellent talk introduced <i>Scientific Data<\/i>\u2019s key principles and the \u2018Data Descriptor\u2019, emphasizing the importance of data sharing for the advancement of science, in the context of his own research in genomics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/HideyaKawaji\/141122-sci-datajapannov2014\">Download the slides<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the same event, Professor Naomichi Matsumoto, Editor-in-Chief of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/jhg\"><i>Journal of Human Genetics<\/i><\/a>, introduced new trends in genome research and databases, and Professor Katsushi Tokunaga, Editor-in-Chief of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/hgv\"><i>Human Genome Variation<\/i><\/a> discussed how the journal has responded to a demand by the community for a place to publish important discoveries, observations and analysis about research on the human genome.<\/p>\n<p>The speakers attracted a large audience, with 250 participants filling the seminar venue, and there were many discussions and questions during and after the seminar. The post-event questionnaire demonstrated that over 82% of participants found the seminar informative.<ins cite=\"mailto:Matthew%20Ward\" datetime=\"2014-12-03T15:01\"><\/ins><\/p>\n<h2>37th annual meeting of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan<b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeplan.co.jp\/mbsj2014\/english\/index.html\">the 37th annual meeting of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan<\/a> on 26 November 2014, we introduced <i>Scientific Data<\/i> at the Forum \u2018Data-driven approaches to elucidate physiological metabolic machinery conserved across species\u2019 to 60 researchers, which generated extensive discussion, especially among bioinformaticians. The presentation focused on a publisher\u2019s perspective on data and reproducibility, and discussed the community and generalist data repositories recommended by Scie<i>ntific Data<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/figshare.com\/articles\/Scientific_Data_at_MBSJ_2014\/1258896\">Download the slides<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later in the conference, we held a \u2018Meet the Editor\u2019 session, inviting Dr. Kawaji who answered various questions from researchers, at the <i>Scientific Data<\/i> booth. Delegates\u2019 questions included specific pre-submission queries and discussion around data curation and metadata, following Dr. Kawaji\u2019s enlightening explanation on ISA-tools as one of the key features and author services of <i>Scientific Data<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, detailed information about the journal is now available in Japanese \u2013 an open access article introducing <i>Scientific Data<\/i> was published on December 1st.
