Yet despite the reductions in work force, drug makers actually increased their investments in research and development in 2009, according to the newly released <a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO\/10\/522&#038;format=HTML&#038;aged=0&#038;language=EN&#038;guiLanguage=en\">EU Industrial R&amp;D Investment Scorecard<\/a>, which analyzes the spending patterns of the top 1,400 companies around the world.<\/p>\n<p><em>FierceBiotech<\/em> crunched the numbers and came up with the top ten research spenders in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/special-reports\/top-15-pharma-rd-budgets\">pharma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercebiotech.com\/special-reports\/biotechs-biggest-spenders\">biotech<\/a>, respectively. Intriguingly, four of the top six pharma companies are based in the EU, while none of the top 10 biotechs are European.
