{"id":150,"date":"2011-09-12T14:31:17","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T14:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/spoonful\/2011\/09\/fda-reorganization-inspires-hope-for-better-coordination.html"},"modified":"2011-09-12T14:31:17","modified_gmt":"2011-09-12T14:31:17","slug":"fda_reorganization_inspires_ho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/spoonful\/2011\/09\/fda_reorganization_inspires_ho.html","title":{"rendered":"FDA reorganization inspires hope for better coordination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Mike May<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In an agency-wide e-mail message on 13 July, US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/AboutFDA\/CommissionersPage\/default.htm\">Margaret Hamburg<\/a> unveiled a massive reorganization of the regulatory watchdog&#8217;s 41-year-old management structure. \u201cThe most obvious change you will see,\u201d she wrote, \u201cis that the Agency&#8217;s programs, in terms of a reporting chain to me, will be divided into &#8216;directorates&#8217; that reflect the core functions and responsibilities of the Agency.\u201d In addition to the existing offices, she said the <span class=\"caps\">FDA<\/span> would also create a new Office of Operations as well as a deputy commissioner for Global Regulatory Operations and Policy \u201cfocused on grappling with the truly global nature of today&#8217;s world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the pharmaceutical industry, the most important change could be the addition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/AboutFDA\/CentersOffices\/OC\/OfficeofMedicalProductsandTobacco\/default.htm\">Office of Medical Products and Tobacco<\/a>, which will be directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnih.org\/about\/foundation\/board\/stephen-p-spielberg-md-phd\">Stephen Spielberg<\/a>, who will assume the new post by the end of September. Speilberg is tasked with helping to coordinate work across the FDA&#8217;s centers for drug, biologics, medical devices and tobacco products.
