{"id":325,"date":"2007-08-28T18:09:33","date_gmt":"2007-08-28T18:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/spoonful\/2007\/08\/biopiracy-in-brazil-and-elsewhere.html"},"modified":"2011-12-15T18:57:00","modified_gmt":"2011-12-15T18:57:00","slug":"biopiracy_in_brazil_and_elsewh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/spoonful\/2007\/08\/biopiracy_in_brazil_and_elsewh.html","title":{"rendered":"(Bio)piracy in Brazil and elsewhere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Biopiracy=stealing (indigenous) knowledge without proper compensation or credit in return.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s <em>New York Times <\/em>carries a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/08\/28\/science\/28biop.html\">fascinating story <\/a>about Marc van Roosmalen, a primatologist credited with discovering five species of monkeys and a new primate genus, who has been sentenced to nearly 16 years in a Brazilian jail.<\/p>\n<p>van Roosmalen, one of <em>Time<\/em> magazine&#8217;s \u201cHeroes for the Planet\u201d in 2000, is charged with, among other things, taking monkeys from the forest without permits and offering to name new species after wealthy donors &#8212; a practice that is historically common in science, as the <em>Times<\/em> article points out.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are rallying to his defense, and 287 of them have signed a petition protesting his sentencing and saying it is indicative of the trend of government repression in Brazil. The government is apparently going overboard in its attempts to prevent biopiracy and, some say, making an example out of van Roosmalen.<\/p>\n<p>This is all well and good. But this article is essentially a rehash of one that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2007\/070806\/full\/448634a.html\">appeared in<em> Nature <\/em>three weeks ago<\/a>. As anyone who works for scientific journals knows, this is par for the course. Articles that appear in <em>Nature<\/em> and <em>Science<\/em> routinely come out slightly modified in newspapers like the <em>Times<\/em>. And I suppose that&#8217;s fair enough. But my complaint here is that nowhere in the article is the acknowledgement that <em>Nature<\/em> first reported the story.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll let the irony wash over you.<\/p>\n<p>P.S. I particularly like the picture that ran with the <em>Times<\/em> article of this snake.
